Burning, Fire Bans & Smoke
Can I have a backyard burn or campfire?
Rules change through the year. Check our Backyard Burning page for what’s currently allowed and dates for the next open burning period. When provincial bans are in place, those apply here too. Government of British Columbia Fire Prohibitions
Who sets burning rules?
Backyard burning rules are set locally (CVRD bylaws for our area) and province‑wide bans/restrictions come from BC Wildfire Service. Always check both.
Who do I call about smoke from a neighbour’s property?
For immediate danger or safety concern, always call 9‑1‑1. To report illegal backyard burns call CVRD Bylaw Enforcement at 250.746.2655.

Do you offer home fire‑safety visits or smoke alarm help?

How can I make my home more wildfire‑resistant?
Start with FireSmart. Local assessments and homeowner rebates are available through Emergency Management Cowichan.
If I’m evacuated after a fire, who helps with short‑term needs?
Emergency Support Services (ESS) can be activated to help evacuees with basic needs.
Joining MBFD
Are you volunteer or paid?
MBFD has paid‑on‑call members supported by 3 full‑time and 1 part‑time career staff.
What are the basic requirements to join?
You bring a good attitude and commitment; we provide the training (firefighting and emergency medical). There are benefits and compensation for paid‑on‑call members. Apply on our Join Us page.
What’s the minimum age? Do you have a junior program?
Yes. Junior members can start at 16.

Do you fill swimming pools or provide non‑emergency water deliveries?
No. MBFD does not provide pool fills/non‑emergency water deliveries.
